In 1980, three affluent north Chicago suburbs responded to concerns over teen suicide, drug and alcohol abuse, gang activity, and vandalism by forming the Committee Representing Our Young Adults (CROYA). Based on the credo that "everything starts with youth, is driven by youth, is for youth, and succeeds or fails because of youth," this organization has successfully offered teens a safe place to grow and been a force in the community for 20 years. Sharing lessons learned by both triumphs and failures, this well-organized book is a blueprint for effective teen programming. Everything from job descriptions of youth workers, agendas for weekly meetings, ideas for programs, suggestions for service projects, and icebreakers to community fund-raising and support are detailed. An appendix supplies reproducible lists, including permission forms, discussion questions, and suggested requirements for committee members. Anyone who works with teens will find this practical, nuts-and-bolts book a genuine asset. Candace Smith
