Coastal Bermuda 10 Walks and 73 Plants...you ll see along the way is a field guide to the coastal plants of the Island of Bermuda. It also includes photos and descriptions of ten scenic walks where plants can be viewed while enjoying a spectacular walk. Plants are photographed in context as well as close up to show flower, fruit, and/or leaf structure. Plant information includes: scientific and family names, plant height, leaf and flower sizes, where on the Island it has been found, and a general description of the plant, often including historical information. Plants are presented beginning with those found closest to the water. One page is devoted to each of the 73 plants in the book. The ten coastal walks are shown on a map as one opens the book. One page is devoted to each walk, including photos of the walk area, where the walk is located, how one can get to the walk, the length of the walk, and what plants one should find on this walk. A general description of the walk is also given, describing scenic highlights. Introductory text discusses the geography of Bermuda, it s geologic history and explains present day geologic features such as the sand and rock types. Plant groups such as native, endemic, and naturalized are explained as well as a general botanical history of the Island. A section on coastal plant characteristics is given so the reader can understand the features that make these plants so unique.

Amy K. Pearson, an American, has taught science for 32 years as a faculty member of the Bancroft School, an independent day school in Worcester, Massachusetts. Since 1997, she has traveled to Bermuda annually to study, teach and learn about island ecology. She has worked with groups of teachers but more often high school students, introducing them to the unique ecology of an oceanic island. She was chosen to be a 2007 National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) Teacher at Sea, spending seventeen days on a NOAA research vessel. She has also received the Bancroft School Carpe Diem Award for excellence in teaching. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from Clark University in Worcester, MA. Her love of plants and the ocean inspired her to write this book. Observing the delicate balance of coastal plants, especially on a tiny, isolated island, stimulated her desire to show others their beauty and importance in nature.
