Little House on the Prairie meets Tales of the City. Catherine convinces her powerful Boston attorney husband, Daniel that having a summer home to get away from the city will be good for their family--and their imploding marriage. Her dream becomes a nightmare when he sends her to do an errand and she returns to find him gone with their daughters. Supportive friends gather to help her as she is in the fight of her life to regain her children. First one couple moves in, then another friend arrives with her two children creating an accidental commune. What will happen when her husband finds out her friends have moved in to the farmhouse? Will this make it more difficult for her to regain the custody of her children?

Abilene Gray spent the late '90s in Taos, New Mexico honing her craft. Years of various newspaper writings, interviews, and attempts at short story writings were no longer enough. She developed ideas and outlines for several novels and began sending out submissions. When she returned to Vermont, the rejections followed her back but encouragement from Sue and Frank Anthony, New England Writers, kept her going. In 2002, Gray submitted "The Gemini Moon" to the SouthWest Writers contest and won a short story fiction award for her depiction of going to powwows and ultimately back to the land with her Vietnam Veteran partner in the mid-70's. From that short story, a trilogy of tales unfurled around the turbulent years that influenced a generation to redefine America's view of herself. ONCE UPON A COMMUNE is the first of three novels. Abilene Gray lives and writes in Saint Petersburg, FL.
At the end of the decade that changed America forever, the post-Woodstock counterculture struck a chord that reverberated beyond the 1969 event. In the blink of an eye, thousands of communes sprouted up across the United States and Europe. From coast to coast, the back-to-the-land movement drew willing converts who wanted to live an idealized dream of peace, love and happiness.

ONCE UPON A COMMUNE is the story of Catherine Janson, wife of a powerful Boston attorney and mother of two little girls, who convinced her husband to buy a summer home in Vermont. Her romantic idea of a country getaway appealed, but ultimately deconstructed their unraveling marriage into a heartbreaking custody battle.

As the summer home evolves into a commune, Catherine's leap into the unknown challenges her beliefs and changes her life in ways she never imagined.
