After graduating from the Washington University School of Fine Arts in 1969 with a BFA in sculpture and painting, Kurt Struckmeyer pursued a varied career at the General Motors Design Center in Warren, Michigan. For over 35 years, he worked as a sculptor, digital technician, process and technology planner, business strategist, historian, writer, and visual communicator, serving under every vice president of the Design Center except its founder Harley Earl. Kurt retired from General Motors in 2005. In 2008, he was asked to write this history of automotive design at General Motors.
Categorized by the head of design, images come to life illustrating how each leader influenced the world with their concepts, their inspiration, and their enthusiasm. Leaders such as Bill Mitchell, Irv Rybicki, Chuck Jordan, Wayne Cherry, Ed Welburn, and the legendary Harley Earl each brought about their own unique label to the cars that they developed. This book attempts to capture their thoughts, their motivations, and best of all their amazing productions with stunning imaginative photography.
