Synopsis

Mercy is a mythic woman of unstated origin. Bernie is an old carpenter ready for the scrap pile. She has had her eye on him for some time. Somehow she knows he is dissatisfied with his life. He thinks men and women should produce something beyond children, i.e. a peaceful, artful, and satisfying society. She catches up with him as he installs the giant golden (plastic) cross on a new building where crosses of braided hair are to be dipped in gold for the most precious of keepsakes. Bernie Bornstein is obsessed with amber and Mercy reveals that in his remote ancestral past he was a bornesteinstechen -- a fisherman of the bruning stones in what is now Poland. He is hit by a piece of brick in a construction accident. Mercy takes him to her rooms beneath the library steps -- she is the library Answer Lady, revered in the city as the woman with all the answers.
