This book could save your life. 'Why Some Survive -' should get your attention if you camp, hike, ski, hunt with family or kids, enjoy outdoor recreation with others or just by going it alone.
Do you enjoy a day at the river or drive remote mountain roads summer or winter?
The book is an 8 Chapter compilation of 117 outdoor survival events that ranged from simple family outings to some that demanded substantial experience and skill. Sometimes skills were exceded, some were accidents, some were from poor or questionable decisions, but most were when someone was not prepared for the worst and it happened.
Our Goal is to have you recognize lessons learned and Common Threads present in tragic and near tragic events. Some of the events received serious media attention but many did not. Many are your average survival situation that grew from someone saying;
- hey let's take a winter drive in the mountains
- or let's take an early summer swim across the river
- or let's hike to the lake, no we don't need a jacket or water we'll be back before dark
- or I can float that rapid come on, leave the life vest here
- or you hunt that ridge and I'll follow these tracks and meet you back at camp before dark
- or don't you kids wander out of sight of our camp without a whistle
- Well the car is stuck and no one knows where we are. I'll have to walk out for help
- We can reach the summit before the storm hits
- or the snow is better outside the groomed runs
Al Seibert PhD who wrote the Foreword for Why Some Survivesald in his OPHRA acclaimed book The Survivor Personality" The best way to learn about survival is to talk to survivors." He said these two authors have tried to let this book be that conversation for you.
A United States Coast Guard officer said in comments about Why Some Some Survive; "Discussions, related to some planned event or recreation outing that elevates risk without recognition of that risk - are major factors in what becomes a tragedy." The book features articles on survival tips, a personal survival equipment list, and descriptions of other survival elements. (Illustrated) Note the range in age of survivors and the role they felt their faith played in keeping them alive.
