About the Author

Rick Edelstein was born and ill-bred on the streets of the Bronx, New York City. His journey embraces many expressions as a writer, director and acting coach. Early in his career he cherishes the times he got 20 kids off the streets in Harlem (HarYou auspices) and during a year of learning, empowered them to express their original selves as actors. (A few have subsequently grown into professional working actors) He has written/ directed many produced TV shows; a recent screen play and TV pilot were optioned by an eminent producer/director; and he has privately coached many acclaimed actors in movies and TV series (including Barbra Streisand, Courtney Love, Hill Harper, Salli Richardson, Anthony Geary, Antonio Fargas, John Considine, Pat Morita, and others.) Rick has also taught stage and screenplay writing at the New School, NYC; film-directing at USC-Cinema, and had his own Private Acting Workshop. While Rick was a member of the NYC Actor’s Studio Writing/Directing units, he was exposed to methods based on Stanislavski, Chekhov, script analysis, sensememory exercises and long rehearsals searching for About the Author 130 Act or Die the character in stage plays . However, after directing/ producing/writing so many hours of TV, and coaching actors in lead roles in TV and movies, he realized that there has to be a what’s next after theatre-based Stanislavski – a new bible for a practical approach in being able to work in TV and Movies within the reality of the biz. It is important to Rick that today’s actors understand and even embrace the limitations of handling the existing exigencies including: limited if any rehearsal time; working with directors who are more concerned with coming in on time than the actor’s process; hitting your marks and remaining in character; the ability to recreate during coverage; always staying in character and being responsive to the moment - all of which motivated Rick to create original exercises to get into and be in character in today’s world of TV and feature productions...thus ACT or Die. Rick continues to coach individual actors for the purpose of: Auditions for roles; refining and defining characters once cast; private weekly session to develop and tune their instruments.
