Synopsis

This addition to the Adoption Healing series contains information that was not included in the two originals. As in the originals, the reader is provided with a description of the aftermath of the separation of mother and child to adoption and the profound effects on their lives. This is followed by additional methods of healing the subsequent wounds, including more inner child work, new visualizations, healing affirmations, anger management and other thoughts and suggestions for healing. Every chapter includes a summary and exercises to do on one’s own.

From the Author

A few summers ago, I attended a barbecue given by a friend of mine at his home in upstate New York. At one point I went inside his home and as I was passing through the living room, I saw a book lying on a coffee table. AThe Complete Idiot's Guide to Zen Living." Knowing nothing about Zen, I picked it up and opened to a page at random. The page I turned to was the beginning of a section entitled, When Bad Things Happen. I read a few pages and knew I had to buy the book.

I went outside and enjoyed the barbecue but my unconscious mind was hard at work, processing what I had read. When I got home, I ordered the Zen book and when it arrived a few days later, I immersed myself in it. The more I read, the more I realized that I had unknowingly been applying some Zen principles in my work and in my own life. I picked up the text that I use for visualizations at the Adoption Healing weekends and saw that the entire book, "What We May Be" is based on Zen thinking. I continued to study and apply the principles more and more in my everyday life. The Zen work I am talking about is about the way we think, not about religion. I hope I have piqued your interest enough for you to explore Zen thinking. This has changed my life. I hope you will let it change yours.

Much of the work in the original AAdoption Healing... a path to recovery" is based on Zen thinking, even though I was unaware of it when I wrote it. I wished I had known more about Zen so I could have included more of the principles in the book. This revelation led me to think about the things I have learned and come to understand better in the eleven years since my first book was published and decided to write this book.

Some things bear repeating and, of necessity, parts of this book that were in the original Adoption Healing are included in this work. And, of necessity, some of the things in this book will be repeated to drive the information home. I hope that what is presented here will facilitate your understanding of the adoption healing process. I've worked with almost as many natural mothers[1] as adoptees and it is clear to me that the psychological experiences of the adoptee and the natural mother when they are separated are almost identical. The aftermath, the effects of their experience on their lives, runs a parallel course for both adoptees and natural mothers. I also believe that the experience of the separation is the same for both, happening at the same time on a cellular level.

The natural mother experience has, for the most part, been unheard, unacknowledged by society, yet the effects of the loss of their babies is life-long and profound, and needs to be understood as well.

My hope is that this work will provide a method of healing for both adoptees and natural mothers and provide to all those touched by adoption an understanding of the profound wounds inflicted by the separation of mother and child. We need to have empathy for what happened to all those affected by adoption loss and to do that, I believe that every adoptee and every mother of adoption loss needs to read about and understand the psychological trauma of adoption separation and its aftermath for all who endured it.
