So, I was standing there in a bookstore buying a cookbook and sitting on the floor behind me were two college age kids looking through a dog breed guide. They were barely able to contain their excitement and were saying things like "lets get a Chow - they look like a teddy bear" and "we should get a German Shorthair Pointer, this book says they should be just fine with a little exercise."
Granted, I did not look like an official vet standing there in my scooter jacket but felt like I could offer some help and said, "don't get a German Short Hair Pointer or a Chow. One will eat your house and the other will bite your face." My pleas felt on deaf ears as they looked up at me as if to say "OK creepy dude in your scooter jacket, mind your own business, and go play with your Barefoot Contessa."
This book was written for every person who has read a dog breed atlas and thought "what is it really like to own this dog?" or "this dog breed atlas says every breed will work for me. They can't all possibly work for me." The truth of the matter is that if you live in a normal house, with a normal budget, and a job, and maybe a significant other, and have other things to do than worry about your dog chewing up your house or taking them for 5 hour hike every day - every dog is not perfect for you.
