Attack of the Contrafact: Jazz Tunes for the Adept and Incautious, Vol. 1 is a collection of unusual and challenging compositions by the critically acclaimed jazz saxophonist, composer, critic, and author, Chris Kelsey. Based on the harmonic foundations of songs from the classic jazz canon like I Got Rhythm, What is This Thing Called Love, and Ladybird, the tunes provide the intermediate and advanced instrumentalist with 15 unusual and frequently daunting tunes/etudes designed to stretch his or her concept of jazz performance. The compositions comprise angular intervallic relationships, asymmetrical rhythms, unpredictable melodic contours and oblique harmonic relationships in a manner that upholds the essential elements of jazz performance practice even as they subvert tradition. The tunes in this volume will open new horizons to the intrepid jazz musician.
A "contrafact" is an original jazz composition written on the harmonic foundation of an existing one. Among the hundreds of well-known contrafacts are Charlie Parker's Moose the Mooche (from I Got Rhythm), Thelonious Monk's Bright Mississippi (Sweet Georgia Brown), Dexter Gordon's Fried Bananas (It Could Happen to You), and Jimmy Giuffre's Four Brothers (Jeepers Creepers).

About the Author
Saxophonist/educator/composer Chris Kelsey has been called “a provocateur in the best sense of the term: a player (and writer) who thrives on pushing buttons,” by Derek Taylor of All About Jazz, and “at the forefront of the fiery reedists today,” by Gapplegate Music Review. Kelsey's music follows in the tradition of individualism and innovation of those jazz artists he most admires, among them, John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, Ornette Coleman, and Miles Davis. Kelsey began playing alto sax at the age of ten in his home state of Oklahoma. After graduating with a Bachelors of Music Education from the University of Central Oklahoma, he moved to New York City, where he refined and expanded his education and performing career. In 1993 he recorded Stomp Own It with his Almost Jazz Trio, for his own Saxofonis Music label. A series of CDs on the CIMP label followed, featuring such NYC experimental jazz musicians as Steve Swell, Dominic Duval, Jay Rosen, and Francois Grillot. Kelsey’s bands have played many New York venues for jazz and new music, including the Knitting Factory, Roulette Intermedia, P.S. 122, CB’s 313, and many others. He’s also played at many of the city’s summer festivals, including the Knit’s “What is Jazz? Festival; also the Bell Atlantic, Heineken, and Texaco New York Jazz Festivals. Kelsey began a parallel career as a music journalist in the mid ‘90s, contributing to such publications as Jazziz, JazzTimes, The All Music Guide, and others, as well as working as an editor and writer on the website Jazz.com with author/pianist Ted Gioia. In the '90s Kelsey pursued graduate studies in Musicology at the City University of New York and studied briefly with saxophonist Lee Konitz. Among Kelsey’s recent albums is Happy House on the Unseen Rain label; it features interpretations of Ornette Coleman compositions by a quartet Kelsey co-leads with trombonist Pat Hall. Also on Unseen Rain is Live at Magnolia's, a performance of classic jazz tunes with guitarist Jack DeSalvo, and Stutches, a trio date with percussionist Tom Tedesco and DeSalvo, recorded in 1991 but released for the first time in 2011. In addition to his performing and recording activities, Kelsey teaches privately and is the Director of Instrumental Music at Trinity-Pawling School in Pawling, New York.
