1970 was a time of great demoralization for the U.S. Army in Vietnam. The author served in the Army during that time and listened carefully to the stories of his fellow soldiers returning from the Vietnam War. Much of this powerful book is based on their personal experiences, as well as actual events. This is the tale of three young Americans, one black and two white, who are drafted into the U.S. Army, undergo the rigors of military training and are eventually assigned to a combat unit in Vietnam – the hard-luck Third of the Eighth, Fourth Division. What if a group of infantry soldiers on the verge of invading Cambodia refused to fight? Readers will enjoy this gritty saga of courageous young men striving together towards a peace that had eluded America up to that point. They pursue their goal with determination, some good luck, and a healthy dose of humor. Join them as they set off on an odyssey that could lead to the end of the Vietnam War!

Brian King is a sixty-seven year old writer and political activist. He lives in Seattle, Washington with his wife, Paula, and very near his son, daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren. He retired six years ago after working thirty-five years as a Respiratory Therapist. Brian was born in Chicago, Illinois, and went through grade school there, and high school after he and his family moved to California’s Santa Clara Valley. During the summer of 1965 he went to the South and worked in the Civil Rights Movement on voter registration campaigns. Upon returning to California, where he was a student at San Jose State college, he became deeply involved in the movement against the War in Vietnam. A year after receiving his draft notice for induction into the Army, with the FBI hot on his trail, Brian decided to report for training in the Army. Many of his friends in the anti- war movement agreed with him that he could organize more important opposition to the war as a soldier than as a prisoner, had he refused induction. Brian’s time in the army provided him the material for So Long, Vietnam. The Army decided not to send him to the war, but many of his friends told him their stories of their experiences in the combat zone. These stories exerted a strong pull on Brian until, twenty years later, he decided to write his book.
