From the Author:
Life After: The Arising is my first novel. My love of zombies began when I got my 8-year-old hands on Nancy E. Krulik's Shock Shots novelette, but didn't truly flourish until I played Resident Evil 2, then watched George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead. Zombie fiction was soon to follow, and by the time I hit college, I realized I longed for something blending the genre's silly tendencies with its grim ones, something at turns humorous, depressing, invigorating, and terrifying. And thus, the Life After series was born.
The story began as adolescent wish fulfillment, but the older I got, the more I realized I was using the apocalypse to explore what it means to become an adult. Like my protagonist, I left college believing myself to be fully prepared for the workforce and mature relationships, but I was stunned to discover how little I knew. Adulthood refused to conform to my expectations; my career wasn't what I'd intended, my heartaches were no less potent, and living day to day was more confusing and challenging than I'd imagined. In spite of this, I managed to have fun, fall in love, and learn that getting older isn't something to fear. For better or worse, I began to truly appreciate the important things in life.
Granted, I didn't kill any zombies along the way, but the embrace of this realization narrowed my focus for what Life After: The Arising could be: an entertaining but substantive coming-of-age odyssey in an apocalyptic landscape.
