A pigeon named Martin sets out to Africa on a mission to fulfil his dream of attaining freedom and equality for all animals. He overcomes many obstacles but pays the ultimate price before realising his dream. Having laid the groundwork, the animals, led by Victor, take up the cause to free the animals from the oppressive grip of farmer Devilin of Willowmore Farm. Their fight for peace, freedom and equality is reminiscent of the political struggle in South Africa and the rest of the world. The plot contains a healthy mix of ingredients – love, politics, friendship, betrayal, violence and values – to whet the appetite of a wide audience of avid readers. More importantly however, it will get them thinking with all the hidden meaning and symbolism in the work. The author’s clever and often brilliant use of English language tools is a pleasure to behold. The novel is loaded with a delightful variety of literary devices. There is also a masterful mix of descriptive language to help bring scenes and imagery to life. The characters also burst from the page in an explosion of adjectives and careful character build-up. The easy, flowing style of the author makes for pleasurable reading. An intelligently crafted novel that should not be taken at face value – it’s one to be pondered upon and scrutinised carefully!
