NORBERT ELIAS (1897-1990) was one of the greatest sociologists of the twentieth century. He studied with Alfred Weber in Heidelberg and served as Karl Mannheim's assistant in Frankfurt. On Hitler's coming to power, he went into exile, first in France and then in Britain. His magnum opus The Civilising Process received little attention when it was published in Switzerland in 1939 and only after Elias's formal retirement in 1962 were most of his other books and essays published. International intellectual celebrity came to him right at the end of his long life. STEPHEN QUILLEY is Senior Lecturer in the School of Politics, International Relations and Philosophy at Keele University.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good Plus. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First English Language Edition. 1987. lxxii, 185pp. "Involvement and Detachment - with a new Introduction written specially for this English edition - is principally concerned with the sociology of knowledge, though it adds to and clarifies theories of civilizing processes and state formation. Professor Elias presents here his sociological stance on issues such as the cold war and the arms race and above all shows unequivocally that the theory of the civilizing processes is not some latter-day theory of unilinear progress. Using the theory of civilizing processes, Professor Elias lays the groundwork for a sociological theory of knowledge, a theory which is uncompromisingly developmental. With it, he seeks to diagnose and overcome obstacles to the growth of reliable scientific understanding about the human-social world." Previous owner's name and address to FFEP. Both book and unclipped dust jacket are otherwise in excellent condition. All contents are tight and clean. There are no other inscriptions. Seller Inventory # Sociology029
