Chitham and Winnifrith select 141 poems written between 1830 and 1849 by Charlotte, Branwell, Emily, and Anne Bronte. Emily is generally regarded as the best poet of the four, but the others are also of interest, especially when read as part of the Bronte "group." Along with the poems, the editors supply introductory biographical and literary information, a discussion of the imaginary worlds of Angria and Gondal that figure in many poems, and an especially useful set of explanatory notes. This supplementary material illuminates the poems without becoming ponderous, making this an ideal book for general readers interested in exploring the Brontes' poetry.
