Defining "life" as that which is capable of both self-replication and evolution, Scott explains the biochemistry of cells and their genetic material, reviewing various popular theories about how these processes evolved in terms undergraduates and adult public library patrons can follow. Unlike other popular titles purporting to explain life's origin and evolution to general readers, Scott's book frankly acknowledges serious gaps in experimental evidence supporting key parts of prevailing theory. For example, while amino acids have spontaneously formed under experimental conditions simulating the "primordial soup" and lipid molecules have shown an affinity for arranging themselves into cell-like membranes, experiments have so far failed to show how the first replicating nucleic acids were produced or how links between genes and proteins were forged.
