From the Back Cover:

This book reassesses Renaissance English literature and its placein Elizabethan society. It examines, in particular, the role ofItalianate literary imitation in addressing the ethical andpolitical issues of the sixteenth century. In doing so, it revealsthe significance of the Calvinist discourse of EnglishProtestantism as a stimulus to literary creation. It demonstrateshow the clash between the values of the Continental system fromwhich England was separating and the assumptions of the Elizabethanreligious settlement of 1559 prompted writers to use creativeimitation as a means of exploring the problematical relationshipbetween the two.

At the heart of this activity was a need for English men andwomen to formulate what their new identity should be, both at theindividual and national levels. A radically new picture emergesfrom this investigation both of the literature of the EnglishRenaissance, and also of the English Reformation itself. The authorshows how imitation of Italianate literary culture had a muchgreater influence on the formation of modern British identity thanhas been hitherto supposed. He demonstrates that it also investedRenaissance English literature with many of its most characteristicattributes. Above all, the English Renaissance and Reformation areshown to be far more closely linked than previous scholars haverecognized.
