The fifth edition follows the familiar and successful structure of the previous editions and examines the human role in natural processes and systems. Professor Goudie provides a discussion of the development of ideas on global change together with chapters that deal with the impacts that humans have had on all aspects of the environment. The topics covered include vegetation, animals, soils, water, landforms, the atmosphere and climate. The book also considers the future, in particular the possible consequences of global warming.

Andrew Goudie is Professor of Geography, University of Oxford where he was also Head of Development and a Pro-Vice-Chancellor from 1995-1997. His previous books include Environmental Change (with Stokes, 4th edn 2000), The Nature of the Environment (Blackwell, 3rd end 1993), The Changing Earth (Blackwell, 1995), The Human Impact Reader (Blackwell, 1997) and The Earth Transformed (with Heather Viles, Blackwell, 1997).
