Book Description:
Theology is a queer thing, out of line with the modern world. It speaks of God to people "come of age", freed from their divine tutelage and doing just fine. But theology - when it listens to God - unsettles such complacency, for it speaks of a world that is to come, and is even now arriving, disturbing our certainties. Queer theology unsettles complacency - both religious and secular - about our bodies and their desiring. By divinizing desire, it radicalizes "queer theory" and its deconstruction of sexual and gender identities, the fundamental categories by which western bodies are known. Queer theology invokes a complex social space in which transcendent eros frees us from the fear of our differences. In this remarkable collection of specially commissioned essays, some of the brightest and best of Anglo-American scholars, established and up-coming - and from a variety of academic and religious backgrounds - show us how western bodies and their desires are queerer than often thought, the mobile products of ever changing discourses and regimes of power; the threat and promise of what is yet to come.
From the Back Cover:
Queer Theology makes an important contribution to public debate about Christianity and sex. This remarkable collection of essays reconceptualizes the body and its desires, enlarging the meaning of sexuality for the good of the churches.

Written by some of the most able and insightful of Anglo-American scholars, established and up-coming, and from a variety of academic and religious backgrounds, the book shows how western bodies are queerer than often thought, and that the same is true of the God who elicits and tutors their desires.
