Synopsis
Essential Haematology is the leading undergraduate haematology textbook. Directed to clinical students, laboratory technicians, and physicians studying for MRCP and MRCPath examinations, this text provides a general summary of both clinical and laboratory aspects of haematology. It covers aetiological aspects, clinical symptoms and signs, laboratory findings, differential diagnosis and treatment of blood disorders. Sections on the normal physiology, biochemistry, biology and molecular biology of the blood cells and clotting factors are included as is the physiology of normal haemopoiesis and lymphocyte development, and of the functions of blood cells. This new edition includes a chapter on blood transfusion and the appendices include details on cytogenetics and monoclonal antibodies in haematological diagnosis. Expanded sections in the new third edition cover haemopoiesis and growth factors, haemoglobinopathies, oncogenes and the aetiology of the leukaemias, bone marrow transplantation, myelodysplasia, AIDS, and the molecular biology of the clotting factors, protein C and S. Full-colour illustrations including clinical pictures, line diagrams, photomicrographs, x-rays, CT scans and ultrasound pictures support the text throughout.
