The aim of the book is to teach and prepare MRCP candidates for the examination by providing a basic grounding in the core subjects. The questions have been designed in the new style of integrated basic and clinical science. Recent advances in molecular medicine have been incorporated throughout, as have the more traditional basic sciences such as anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and pathology.
Every question has a detailed teaching answer, which should eliminate the need for continual reference to a textbook. The answers are composed not merely to answer each question at hand, but also to give a broader look at the subject and to provide a tutorial course in MRCP standard medicine.
. This book has been written specifically for the new style MRCP Part 1 examination.

O'Callaghan's MRCP Part I - System Based Tutorial begins with an introductory chapter giving sound advice on how to approach revision and the examination itself. The main body of the text is a bank of MCQ's divided into chapters by subject specialty, eg: cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, with 20 stem questions per chapter. What gives this book an advantage over its competitors is that each group of questions has been carefully devised to give the reader maximal exposure to key topic areas. The questions also reflect the new shift of emphasis of the examination towards the basic sciences, and in particular, the correct answers are complemented by an explanatory paragraph, allowing the reader to gain a deeper understanding of the topics answered incorrectly without the need to refer to a textbook. This, together with its compact size, makes the book an ideal tool for quick revision sessions on the ward.Review:
"An MCQ book for the new style MRCP part 1; it includes a selection of 20 questions per group in 11 different medical specialties, including one on medical statistics. A good pocket size booklet that owes its value to its carefully chosen questions and equally carefully structured answers. Brief and succinct, these integrate basic and molecular with clinical information. Also annotated with diagrams facilitating complex issues, it manages to convey a much wider angle of the subject than the one usually limited to in many MCQ based study guides. Good for revision and for its guidance."

"As a straightforward MCQ text, it is excellent. The answers are detailed, accurate and informative. Even for somebody who did this particular bit of the exam over a year ago, it was fun."

"The author's introduction is excellent, highlighting key question areas, advice on planning revision, and emphasising the strategy and technique which is crucial to scoring well on negatively marked MCQs. I would have certainly benefited from this introductory chapter prior to embarking on my preparation. The questions were well balanced and had an appropriate leaning towards the basic sciences, with a particular strength in molecular medicine, which may reflect the authors natural interest. This book certainly covers topical material which has not yet made it into the pages of many good rival MCQ books..."
