An anthology of forty lyrical poems explores the extraordinary world of nature and the wonders of the outdoors, from the glowing lights of two fireflies, to an angry volcano, to the peace and quiet of an early morning.

From School Library Journal:
Grade 3-5-Almost all of these brief poems describe encounters with the micro world. The color of a sunset is "caught/ and kept.../inside a twist/of ocean shell." An inchworm lands on a human head and wonders "What is this funny looking tree?" Apt metaphors and vivid imagery reveal the quiet goings-on at the edge of our perception and also give new perspectives on electrical storms, volcanic eruptions, and traffic jams. Each verse will catch children's attention and prompt smiles and nods of recognition. Black-and-white pencil drawings decorate some pages. Recent verse collections with a similar sensibility include Levy's I'm Going to Pet a Worm Today, N.M. Bodecker's Water Pennies and Other Poems (both McElderry, 1991), Sylvia Cassedy and Kunihiro Suetake's Red Dragonfly on My Shoulder (HarperCollins, 1992), Myra Cohn Livingston's I Never Told (McElderry 1992), Marilyn Singer's Turtle in July (Macmillan, 1989), and Jane Yolen's Bird Watch (Philomel, 1990). Levy's poems, however, bring fresh insights.

From Booklist:
Gr. 3-5. The author of I'm Going to Pet a Worm Today and Other Poems (1991), Levy maintains a child's fresh perspective and minute observation of nature in this collection of 40 short poems. She heightens the reader's awareness of common occurrences in poems such as "Drizzle," which begins "One drop / surprised my nose-- / a splat, / silent and soft / as the kiss of a gnat." Simplicity of words, subtlety of rhymes, and thoughtful expression of ideas give the poetry its appeal and finesse. Appearing on alternate spreads, Robert Sabuda's small, understated drawings illustrate the poetry in shades of gray. A quiet, rewarding collection of nature poetry for children. Carolyn Phelan
