Ages 3-5. There are all sorts of reasons to get or give a hug, and in a delightful fashion, this shows quite a few. The hug action centers on a stocky pig family. When are the hugs welcome? On cold Monday mornings and on the way to work or school. What goes well with bumps on the head or bandages? An "it'll be a-okay hug." Hugs are also good for greeting rarely seen relatives, congratulating good sports, and making up after fights. Each full-page picture (a few pictures show several small scenes) is stamped with Carlson's trademark cheerfulness and fun. She has a knack for art that looks simple but has both nuance and style, especially in its use of patterning. Mostly, however, this is notable for a warm message that will certainly inspire a hug or two between reader and listener. Ilene Cooper
