From the Author
Ethiopia and Eritrea were part of the wealthy and sophisticated civilization of ancient Aksum at a time when Britain had no central government to speak of. I hope my representation of sixth century Aksum in A Coalition of Lions will strike a light of interest in others. I hope someone will read my book and be driven to discover more about the history of the Horn of Africa, and, indeed, to discover more of all its current imperfection and progress.
There is another thing driving my storytelling, of course, and that is the characters I have created. I live, at all times, in two parallel worlds--the physical world of my own family, of my daily work and play in a city which calls itself "The Perfect Centre" of Scotland; and the imaginary world of my invented family, who happen to work and play and love and hate in the sixth century. They are with me as constantly as my real family, and I am compelled to tell their stories.
A Coalition of Lions picks up on characters who appeared in The Winter Prince, my first novel, and their tale will soon be continued in The Sunbird.
About the Author
Elizabeth Wein has a B.A. from Yale and a Ph.D from the University of Pennsylvania. She has written two companion novels to A Coalition of Lions: The Winter Prince (now in Firebird paperback) and the forthcoming The Sunbird.
Elizabeth and her husband both ring church bells in the English style known as "change ringing"—they met at a ringers’ dinner!—and now live in Scotland with their two young children.
