Ives uses the recognizable language of a favorite recipe in collecting all of the reassuring ingredients needed to put six adorable bunnies to bed a game of hide and seek, a bath, milk, a bedtime story then follows each comforting step from bath time, …place in soapy water. Gently scrub. Watch very closely. Fold into a soft towel…and allow to cool down, to bedtime. Each borderless watercolor painting uses soft, warm pastel colors and is an invitation into the mother rabbit's cozy home where her happy bunnies play with their toys, read, and help one another put on their pajamas before snuggling down for the night. A calm mother keeps a strong, watchful eye over her little dears as she tucks them into bed, sprinkling with kisses. After sleeping in a warm place until morning, the bunnies are ready for fresh carrots for breakfast to complete the sweet rabbit pie. And sure enough, the text is dispensed in the form of a recipe to guide Mother Rabbit as she tries to get her six little bunnies to bed. The ingredients? A game of hide-and-seek, a bath, six pairs of pyjamas, etc. Step one? Find six small rabbits. That's easy because they are all over the house--reading, painting, pouring tea for stuffed animals. In step two, Mother takes off their "dirty bits," and gives them a scrub in the tub. Six cups of milk later, they are tucked in with a sprinkling of kisses. There's a sweetness to this that is heightened and expanded by the soft, candy-colored artwork, but Ives doesn't forego humor for charm. The pictures, which flow across borderless double-page spreads, offer plenty to smile at, especially the round-faced, squirmy, jumpy bunnies--cuteness in motion. Mama, a strong, safe presence, is unflappable in the face of the commotion, choosing to order the chaos with kisses. Lots to look at and like. Ilene Cooper
