“The Boy in Number Four had a passion and a dream ... to one day be a player on a big league hockey team.” It takes hard work and dedication to make it to the big league, but those aren’t the only things that are important. Respect, determination and the sheer thrill of the game brought Bobby Orr from a small northern town in Canada to one of the best teams in the NHL. Using Bobby Orr and his journey as a model, The Boy in Number Four celebrates the game of hockey—from backyard rinks to the big leagues. A book for hockey enthusiasts of all ages!

REGAN THOMSON is a graduate in graphic design from Humber College in Toronto and taught art at Kent Academy in Jos, Nigeria. She enjoys a variety of mediums including design, illustrations, fine art and photography. She lives in Harrow, Ontario with her husband Steve and their 5 children.
PreS-Gr 3—Aimed at young readers, this picture book focuses on the early development of hockey great Bobby Orr's character and fortitude. Setting itself apart from most biographies, this rhyming homage to Orr focuses instead on the athlete's diligence and determination to play for a major team from a young age. Although the text is somewhat hampered by hackneyed inspirational phrases ("There were times when it was easy, and others that were tough, and moments when it seemed/it would be better to give up."), the illustrations, based on Orr's personal photographs, are lovely. Sharp drawings, rendered in colored pencil, are rich in tone, capturing the unique contours of the ice as well as the complexity of shadow throughout each panel. A full-page afterword by Orr encourages kids to be active, participating in whatever sport they love. VERDICT This book is sure to find its place among hockey, fans young and old.—Carol Connor, Cincinnati Public Schools, OH
