The third book of Goytisolo's acclaimed Álvaro Mendiola trilogy, this novel uses a challenging and innovative style. Jumping between perspectives and across time and space, the narrative loosely follows the titular hero Juan, an exile and pariah, while also exploring the themes of Spanish colonialism and slavery. Juan Goytisolo was a Spanish poet, essayist, and novelist who won the prestigious Cervantes Prize in 2014 and was widely considered to be Spain's greatest living writer at the beginning of the 21st century. His left-wing views and opposition to Francisco Franco led to his long-lasting, self-imposed exile from Spain in the late 1950s. Though his early work exhibits a more realistic style, Goytisolo is best known for his later, more avant-garde fiction that experiments with language while critiquing sexual and religious conservatism.
