ea. vol: unpaged. (UNICEF Pop-Up Bks.). CIP. Viking. 1986. pop-up $12.95. Grade 3-6 There is a great deal of well written information packed into a very few pages in these pop-up books. . . . Japan gives a brief description of the home and its furnishings, of Tokyo and the bullet train, of traditions and food, of religion and education, and of the work place. . . . Egypt is not quite as thorough in its overview, but is adequate as the thumb-nail sketch that it is. The more interesting pop-ups concern the temple of Abu-Simbel, the three Pyramids of Giza, and a tomb in the Valley of the Kings. No mention is made of King Tut. The new terms and unfamiliar words are set in italics and defined in the text. Each contains a small section of about a dozen ``useful words and phrases'' that includes a pronunciation guide. Both would be good choices for supervised unit studies in the classroom, but not very practical for general circulation. Eldon Younce, Harper Elementary School Library, Kans.

"Irrashai-mase," begins this book, or "welcome to my home." As one title in the UNICEF series of pop-up books, Journey to Japan presents facts about a country that is both rich in heritage and in the forefront of new technology. The pop-ups provide readers with a view of homesbreakaway walls reveal spare but comfortable interiors; a three-dimensional Tokyo skyline; the robotics of an automobile assembly line; and the Great Buddha of Todaiji Temple. The illustrations and text are in harmony, but the information begins and ends a bit abruptly. (All ages
