Winner Thomas Cook Travel Book Award. 253 pages. hardcover. jacket design by Ann Winslow. keywords: History Central America Travel. FROM THE PUBLISHER - SO FAR FROM GOD is the story of a recent journey that began in Spain and took Patrick Marnham from California-a place 'so far into the future it is practically detached from the continent'-through the ruined countries to the south where the word 'America' was first used. In the North American imagination the Hispanic threat is muddled with the Communist menace, and Marnham, who had long been interested in the ruins of the Spanish empire, wanted to see for himself the defiance offered to the most powerful country in the world by these tiny ancestors. Having previously visited the more settled, southern parts of the Central American Isthmus, Marnham set out to visit those small countries that lie between them and Mexico-Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua-where all the trouble occurs. With humor, compassion, and a mercilessly clear eye he portrays the people and predicaments he encountered on a fascinating and frequently dangerous journey. Marnham offers extraordinarily vivid evocations of how guerrilla movements, journalistic standstills, political maneuvers of the United States, and Church involvements all converge and jostle for position. His adventures are judiciously and eloquently seasoned with up-to-the-minute politics and historical background. SO FAR FROM GOD is a shrewd and provocative view of the political culture of Central Americans-arid of their fearful yearning attitude toward their northern neighbor. PATRICK MARNHAM was born in Jerusalem in 1943 and educated at Oxford University. In 1968 he hitchhiked to Nepal, a journey he described in his book ROAD TO KATMANDU. In 1976 he was asked by the Minority Rights Group to tour through West Africa in the aftermath of the great drought to write a report on the nomads of Sahel: his second book was FANTASTIC INVASION: DISPATCHES FROM CONTEMPORARY AFRICA. Mr. Marnham is also the author of Lourdes: A Modern Pilgrimage. He is a barrister, a short-story writer, and a television script writer. He was a reporter for Private Eye in 1966-68 and literary editor of The Spectator in 1981-82. He lives in London. inventory #501. Seller Inventory # z501
