Grade 3-6 A sincere, charming story of a child overcoming fears. On his first stay away from home without his family, timid Ben faces many challenges: Aunt Rose, whom his brother said was mean; sleeping alone; the bossy girl next door; a thunderstorm; but most of alla big dog. His aunt had planned Gully as a surprise and later for a birthday present, but Ben is terrified of the dog until a thunderstorm brings them quivering together under the same bed. During that weekend, Ben proves that he can be brave when he and Hana become trapped in the attic until Gully brings his aunt to their rescue. The simple plot is realistically portrayed with genuine children's emotions and reactions. The message that everyone has dragons to fight is evident as a natural element of Ben's dilemma, with the expected resolution of boy and dog becoming friends. Julie Cummins, Monroe County Lib .
