Based on years of notes kept by West, this work is at once an autobiography and a novel. Evans organized and edited the notes, but the story is all West's. In this tale of two centuries of West's family tree, readers will discern her familiar descriptive style and psychological analysis as well as traces of familiar characters. The content comes from stories, experience, and an imagination honed by years of travel and writing. The literary license West takes in recreating events does not diminish the insight we gain into her characters and into her own often incongruous and always independent nature.
