Text: English, German (translation)From School Library Journal:
Kindergarten-Grade 2 In his first picture book, Dahan creates a surreal book which is more ludicrous than imaginative. While rowing in the light of the moon, a little man, comically portrayed in cartoon caricature, decides to befriend the moon. The moon delights in the friendship but in showing off breaks his tether and lands in the water. After rescuing the moon from the sea, the man takes him home where they sing, dance, read, eat, and finally sleep. And if that were not fantasy enough, in the morning, the little man rows out to befriend the sun and so too brings him home to share in the frivolity. Although the character portrayed is not young, his qualities are childlike, and children will relate to his curiosity and endearment to the moon. The text, written in cursive instead of print, may pose some problems for young readers, but the pictures faithfully reinforce the written text and make the actions easy to distinguish. Lavish with oils that show an artistry richly inventive yet deftly detailed, My Friend the Moon evolves from a murky midnight blue rich in somberness to a brightly decorated golden yellow. Taken at face value, the story offers amusement, but if there is any deeper significance it will be lost on a young audience. Adults are more likely to appreciate the humor and artistry of this tale, while children will prefer Eric Carle's Papa , Please Get the Moon for Me (Picture Bk. Studio, 1986).
