Grade 2-4--Naturescapes attempts to incorporate the pop-up book concept into a "field guide" for children. Unfortunately, it falls short of the mark on both counts. Pop-ups should be entertaining and/or educational, but Naturescapes' mundane and static pop-ups will not engage readers' interest via mechanical involvement. The four pop-up scenes contain no tabs to pull or even flaps to lift. They merely create a lovely three-dimensional foreground for the double-spread illustrations. A field guide is, by definition, meant to be taken outdoors for "field use." The pop-up format is too fragile and the book's size is too cumbersome to function as a field guide. Another shortcoming is the limited number of plant species which are illustrated and described in detail for each ecosystem. Although an identification key to each pop-up is provided, animals which are listed are not given any detailed drawings or descriptions. Thus, the book will be of little help for budding outdoor naturalists. National Geographic's pop-up nature series far outshines this weak attempt. --Barbara B.
