Showcasing his message of environmental protection, this testament to Robert Bateman’s important work as an artist and conservationist features early paintings, most of which have never before been collected. Alongside the images, the artist comments on the pictures, offering the reader detailed explanations of how he uses art to relay meaning and beauty from the worlds of nature and wildlife. Also providing the different stages of a painting, from conception to completion, this gorgeous collection shows an artist at work a rare insight into the mind of one of the most celebrated nature artists today.

Ramsay Derry is an editor, a writer, a nature conservationist, and the author of The Art of Robert Bateman. He lives in Toronto, Ontario.
Canadian-born Robert Bateman is that rara avisan articulate artist, able to explain, analyze, and interpret his own work as few painters can. Interested in art and nature early in life, Bateman concentrated on wildlife subjects. After 1962, influenced by an Andrew Wyeth exhibit, he developed his unique styleabstract form within realism. In 1981 The Art of Robert Bateman ( LJ 1/ 1/82) was published, also with Derry, supplying biography and 75 reproduc tions. Bateman's prolific output in the years since has made possible this new book, with 94 stunning full-color plates, along with photographs of the painter, his family, and friends. Bateman's commentary on individual paintings is a delight. His accurate yet painterly con ceptions of wildlifemammals and birds in their native habitats from Afri ca to Alaskamake this an irresistible volume. Especially for public librar ies. Gloria K.
