Shyness may disguise the most amazing people is the Davies' message in this simple British import. Poonam, the smallest of the first graders, has hardly spoken above a whisper all semester. When the multiethnic class plans a pet assembly, no one dreams that she will have the most surprising entries of all. On the day of the event, the students arrive with cats, dogs, goldfish, and such, but Poonam is late. When she opens the door, the class and Mrs. Wig are shocked to see that six great lions follow her into the classroom. They are, of course, as perfectly well behaved as Poonam herself, performing tricks to the children's amazement. Finally, this small lion tamer finds the courage to address the whole class, offering them rides in the schoolyard aboard the golden cats. For retiring children, this tale will be a refreshing change from the bold-hearted natures of most storybook characters. Dowling's illustrations will remind readers of James Marshall's cartoon style, utilizing soft watercolor washes and whimsical detail throughout. --Virginia E. Shy, soft-spoken Poonam is "a bit on the small side." She is so quiet, in fact, that her teacher and her classmates have to bend down to hear what she is saying. When Mrs. Wig suggests a Pets Assembly, the excited students enumerate their various pets, and Poonam, in characteristically reticent fashion, whispers that she has lions. The day of the Pets Assembly finds things a bit tense as the mix of animals results in considerable chaos. A tardy Poonam is, sure enough, trailed by "SIX ENORMOUS LIONS!" After the well-behaved animals perform for the astonished audience, Poonam treats her friends to rides on her magnificent pets. Proving that good things come in small packages, this sweet and gentle tale brims with sly wit. Dowling's cheerful pictures depict multicultural tykes and a myriad of beguiling pets, highlighted by a lovely leonine sextet. Ages 3-8.
