Studies the history of Europe's evolution from the origins of the Cold War to the fall of the Berlin Wall

Walter Laqueur, a professor of history and an expert commentator on international affairs, has written and edited more than twenty-five books.
This is an excellent and timely study of postwar Europe written by one of the finest historians of our era. Comprehensive in scope, it eschews the stereotypical political and diplomatic focus common to so many surveys. Based largely on secondary sources and memoirs of leading figures, the book is divided into six parts, and includes strong sections on economic, social, and cultural developments in the West, the former Eastern bloc, and the Soviet Union. Laqueur's analyses of economic developments is particularly lucid, and should be a boon to students seeking to grasp the hydra-headed nature of today's European Community. The analytical strength of the book is further augmented by the division of its six major sections into brief chapters and by the author's clear and engaging writing style. Statistical information is also provided within the text for convenient reference. Though recent events in the Soviet Union have already dated much of the final chapters, this is an excellent work destined to become a standard text for the Nineties.
