Describes the jungle and how man's destructive behavior threatens to ruin it as a unique home to a multitude of animals.

PreSchool-Grade 2-- An anthropomorphized fable about conservation that equates the jungle with an overcrowded housing development. Fischetto's story describes some of the area's residents--the nearsighted first-floor dwellers who won't go out alone for fear that " they might bump into someone nasty;" the absentminded long-tails who live on the second floor; the mischievous scoundrels on the third; and multicolored birds who like "to sing a thousand songs " from their lush penthouses. The sloth, Lazybones, is the only one among them who is content to do nothing and relies on the others to look out for him. The belabored tale goes on to relate the changes that occur as man arrives . His visits are innocent enough at first, but he soon helps himself to bits and pieces of the various animals' houses to make fires, build canoes, etc. Next he arrives with huge machines and radically alters the landscape, leaving the majority of the animals homeless. Lazybones is left waiting for someone to come to his rescue. Neither the flat, Jungle Book- like cartoons nor the overly cute, open-ended text do the serious subject justice; the nonfiction classification is truly misleading. Good intentions aside, this cautionary introduction to Amazon ecology doesn't get off the ground.
