PreSchool-Grade 1?A delightful collection of classic rhymes. Harbour's heavy use of muted tones and her overall style is reminiscent of Harold Jones's work in Lavender's Blue (Oxford, 1990). Her traditional style has a distinctly British look to it and lends itself perfectly to the content of the book. Over 35 nursery rhymes have been chosen, ranging from the most familiar?"Hickory Dickory Dock" and "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star"?to those a little less well known such as "Barber, Barber." The presentation is well balanced. It includes some double-page spreads with only one rhyme, several pages that contain a single rhyme each and a few pages that have two or more rhymes. Many of the paintings appear as though they were extracted from picture frames of various shapes. Tiny images of objects such as bottles, brushes, and birds decorate the space that surrounds the primary illustrations. The illustrations are both delicate and full of detail and demand careful perusal.
