In searching for an eccentric old woman's jewel-encrusted turtle, Dakota and Treacle tangle with a recluse author and almost become a midnight menu for mutant eels.

About the Author:
PHILIP RIDLEY was born in the East End of London, where he still lives and works. He studied painting at St Martin's School of Art and by the time he graduated had exhibited widely throughout Europe and written his first novel. As well as books and plays for adults, Philip has written many other books for children including Krindlekrax (1991), winner of the Smarties Prize and the WH Smith, Mind-Boggling Books Award, Kasper in the Glitter (1994), nominated for the Whitbread Prize, and Scribbleboy (1997), shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal. His work has been translated into seventeen languages.
From AudioFile:
Very British in flavor, this rather grotesque fantasy strikes one as the work of a Roald Dahl imitator who, while he has his moments, lacks the master's touch. Plucky, preadolescent Dakota Pink and her best friend, Treacle, make high adventure out of life in a surrealistic setting of urban poverty, surrounded by eccentric and largely incompetent adults. Josie Lawrence sets this often clumsy effort in the best possible light with an enthusiastic reading that makes the most of every bit of color and wit. Roald Dahl it isn't, but it's a cut above almost anything on television. J.N. (c) AudioFile 2000, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine
