Relives some of the greatest moments in the sport's history by hockey greats such as Bobby Orr, Wayne Gretzky, and Phil Esposito

Brian Kendall is the author of several books, including Shutout: The Legend of Terry Sawchuk. He lives in Toronto, Ontario. Ron MacLean is a Canadian sportscaster for the CBC who is best known as the host of Hockey Night in Canada.
Although more snobbish sports fans might accuse Kendall's 100 Great Moments in Hockey of sporting an oxymoronic title, this is nonetheless a commendable effort that combines league history with superb vintage and current photographs. Events are listed haphazardly, and the accounts of such hockey milestones as the U.S. Olympic team's victory over the Soviets in 1980 and Bobby Orr's first scoring title in 1970 would have been better served had they been recounted in chronological order. Still, serious hockey fans will find much to applaud here. Taylor's book is a compilation of photographs and brief text featuring The Great One in all of his manifestations: as a shy seven-year-old skating in his backyard under the watchful eyes of his father; as a bell-bottomed teenager competing against men six years his senior; as captain of the dominant team of the 1980s, the Edmonton Oilers; as gentle, soft-spoken ambassador for a violent sport; and as father and husband. The photographs are excellent, and the "gee whiz!" quality of the text makes this book appropriate for general readers and casual hockey fans. Both books will do well in public libraries with large sports collections.
