In 1951, to help relieve the bleak aftermath of World War II, Britain created the Festival of Britain, a triumphant exploration of the nation's best attributes. The architect of the festival site was the always charming Hugh Casson. Dedicating his career to the service of his country, particularly the royal family, Casson parlayed his obvious social skills into a successful public life as architect, stage designer, professor (of interior design at the Royal College of Art), and, at the end of his professional life, president of the Royal Academy of Art. Manser, a journalist specializing in architecture and design, has written a compelling biography of an architect with few landmark buildings to his credit and, unusually for those in his profession, an ego that was subordinated to that of his clients. Casson's personal life, in particular his lifelong professional collaboration with his wife, Margaret Troup Casson also an architect is discussed, but his life outside of the studio and social functions remains a bit fuzzy. Casson's work at the Royal College and the Royal Academy may be remembered long after the Festival of Britain is forgotten. This first full-length biography is recommended for collections with an interest in architecture or British history. Martin R. Kalfatovic, Smithsonian Inst. Libs., Washington, DC
