Reviews

Ripken enthralled the nation when he broke the seemingly untouchable baseball record for consecutive games played set by the legendary Lou Gehrig. The graciousness he displayed before and after breaking the record was so unusual in an era of spoiled athletes that even nonbaseball fans became Cal Ripken fans. So expect considerable demand for this superior sports autobiography. Virtually born with a bat in his hand, Ripken followed his dad, Cal Senior, into the Baltimore Oriole organization. It's easy to see where the Ripken kids got their work ethic. Toiling in the minors, Cal Senior worked in the off-season to support his family, and his wife chipped in by typing his player evaluation forms. Cal Junior chronicles his moves through the minor leagues and into the majors in great detail, always pointing out what he learned at each step of the journey and who taught it to him. There are some great baseball anecdotes--especially involving fiery Oriole skipper Earl Weaver--and plenty of the behind-the-scenes detail that baseball fans love. There's a little bitterness, too. Cal Senior was the Oriole manager for a time but was fired in a fashion that didn't sit well with Junior. When Cal Junior credits his family for his success, it's not a cliche. He means it, and on these pages, he makes us understand why. Excellent baseball fare. Wes Lukowsky
