When Mrs. Mouse's many children tell her what they would like to give Santa for Christmas instead of making a wish list for themselves, they have a happy surprise. Simultaneous.

Gr. K-1. Turning the tables on Christmas greed, Mrs. Mouse asks each of her nine mousekins what the family should give Santa. Mike advises a bike, Tony a pony, and so on, choosing gifts that rhyme with their names. On Christmas morning, the little mice find that Santa has left those same gifts for them. They decide to give him a cake, which he is eating on the last page, as he strides away with a full sack over his shoulder. The story doesn't explain how or when the mice gave Santa his gift, but children caught up in reading this cheerful little fantasy probably won't be troubled by such details. Beginning readers will find this an accessible holiday book, with simple words, rhyming text, and visual clues in the illustrations. The jaunty ink drawings, washed with bright colors, look clean and fresh on the white background. Carolyn Phelan
