It's Bruce's birthday and Platypus decides to make it a day to remember by throwing a party for him. His friend Echidna comes to help and together they make a special birthday cake (which Echidna turns into an echidna shape with bananas for spines). They put up paper chains and balloons - which Echidna promptly bursts - and set the table for a feast. All is set for a wonderful party except for one vital ingredient. The birthday boy is missing! Platypus hurries to bring him to the party and a wonderful time is had by all.

About the Author:
Chris Riddell was a student of Raymond Briggs at Brighton. He now works in a range of different areas of illustration, including political cartoons. He has illustrated many children's books, texts by other writers as well as his own. SOMETHING ELSE (text by Kathryn Cave) won the 1997 UNESCO prize and was shortlisted for the Smarties Prize and the Greenaway Medal. CASTLE DIARY (text by Richard Platt) won the 2001 Greenaway Medal. Chris lives in Brighton.

Together, he and his friend Echidna prepare for the event, donning homemade birthday hats, making a cake, blowing up balloons, and building paper chains. When everything is finally ready, they realize that they have forgotten the guest of honor. Lively, watercolor and black-ink illustrations enhance the accessible story. The white backgrounds and simple lines keep the focus on the characters' antics. Although the plot is slight, children will enjoy this warmhearted tale of good friends sharing a special time.
