A Cat's Tale...
Let's get one thing straight. Any self-respecting cat ought to know who her real friends are. Teebo's mine. He's the only cat who can call me "Stubby." That's because he saved me from Max, the mad dog who bit off my tail! Everyone else calls me Kikki. Teebo and I love to play tag. So imagine how I felt when Teebo and his people moved, just drove away in a big red car. Suddenly I lost my best friend and gained new neighbors, a pack of dogs called Morris, Doris, and Boris. As if Max wasn't bad enough!
I was so lonely. And scared. Nobody wanted to play with me -- until Morris, Doris, and Boris tried to coax me down from the tree. They said they wanted to be friends. Friends?! With a history like mine, whom do you trust? That's where the real tale began....

Grade 2-4-Teebo and Kikki are two cats that live in a neighborhood inhabited by several other families and their pets, and a very mean dog named Max. Their friendship and adventures end abruptly when Teebo's family moves. Because Kikki has no tail, she is ridiculed by other felines and hopes for a friend when the new people move in. The new residents include an old cat and three young dogs that don't understand why Kikki is afraid of them. Only at this point do readers learn that Max is responsible for her stub of a tail. Fearing the new dogs, she climbs a tree and falls into Max's yard. The puppy pack rescues Kikki (Stubby) and new friendships are cemented. The themes of friends moving away, of not being accepted because of differences, and the fear of strangers are aptly and humorously portrayed. The author conveys genuine feelings and moods, and the full-page black-and-white drawings, one per chapter, enhance the adventures. Unfortunately, the story has so many characters that primary-grade readers may have difficulty sorting them all out.
