One of the greatest pleasures for the experienced sailor, and one of the greatest mysteries for the beginner, is sailboat racing. It is here in the small boats on lakes and bays that the thrills of competition are so rewarding. Here the young skipper makes the wind and water work to his advantage- and measures it against the advantage of his best friend. Racing is not so complicated as to be a mystery for long-yet it is never completely fathomed, and the good sailor is a student of racing as long as he sails. The purpose of this book is to simplify the mystery of sailboat racing for the beginner, and to refresh the principles of strategy and tactics for the expert. The lessons given in Invitation to Sailboat Racing are designed to take the novice sailor from the fundamentals of racing tactics to the point where he is thinking three or four maneuvers ahead. Each lesson and figure is numbered. When a question is asked, the number has a Q after it; and when an answer is given, the number is followed by an A. If no letter is present, the material is simply explanatory. The answers are shown immediately after each problem, on the same or the following page. For this reason it is best to read with the lower portion of the page covered with a card, until an answer is chosen. The problems are programmed in a definite order for greatest learning and comprehension; the beginning sailor is therefore advised to be thoroughly familiar with Parts I and Il before going on. The intermediate sailor may begin with Part Il, and the advanced racing skipper may open the book and test his knowledge anywhere. The racing rules, as set forth by the North American Yacht Racing Union, are presented in part in the Appendix. These will be referred to by number. The reader is encouraged to study them on his own. Not all of the 70-plus racing rules and definitions are discussed in this text.
