Ralph Waldo Emerson
Born in Boston in 1803, Ralph Waldo Emerson has been called a "cosmic optimist" and the first of American Romantics. Enormously influential and controversial in the intellectual world of his day, Emerson remains one of the great American thinkers. His message is intensely human and speaks directly to modern man--caught in a world he never made and to which he must constantly readjust in order to survive.
