Since Darwin dropped his bombshell of evolutionary theory, humans have been fascinated with our development from ape to man. This companion volume to the new four-part A&E series offers intriguing answers to questions about where we are going and what makes us human. 180 illustrations, many in color.

This companion to an A&E cable TV series delivers--which, in the search for human origins, is no small task. For of all the fields of scientific investigation, paleoanthropology is probably the one fullest of hype, conflicting claims, competition, and outright fraud. Yet Caird makes some sense out of all the various varieties of humans, subhumans, ape-human hybrids, and human predecessors that have been uncovered over the years (he even covers Piltdown Man, one of the most notorious hoaxes in the history of science), and he affords some insight as to why Homo sapiens has become this planet's dominant species. One caution: those whose paleoanthropological passion is very well informed may not be that impressed with the book, for it offers no new revelations but instead covers its topic's mainstream. But those who saw the TV series and weren't quite satisfied by the video snack ought to chow down. Jon Kartman
