A recovering alcoholic herself, Chellis knows that someone else can't ``give'' one alcoholism, but her book illustrates how the stress of striving to be an ac tive member of the Kennedy clan con tributed to its development in Joan Kennedy. First as friend, then as ad ministrative assistant from 1979 to 1982, Chellis became part of Kennedy's struggle to save herself and her mar riage, and finally just herself. Though information on her early years is includ ed, the focus is on events surrounding the 1980 campaign, ending with Ted and Joan Kennedy's divorce and Joan's commencement speech at her alma ma ter in 1984. The portrait is not always flattering, but it is multifaceted. Show ing Kennedy as a woman triumphant over alcohol and other personal trage dies, this should have broad appeal.
