Though it breaks no new ground, this sturdy offering adds a kid-appealing twist to a basic concept. Set against solid-color backgrounds are labeled objects or creatures, one per page, progressing through the alphabet (astronaut, bicycle, clown, etc.) and accompanied by upper-and lower-case representations of the particular letter. In addition, one, two or three square flaps on each page lift to reveal objects starting with that letter; along with the large-scale likeness of a jolly blue "whale," for example, are flaps concealing "window" and "watch." Unadorned, somewhat childlike drawings illustrate these easily accessible subjects; the result is an attractive, satisfyingly simple learning experience. Ages 2-4.
